Detailed 6-step guide to applying for a passport online in 2026 via the Ministry of Public Security's Public Service Portal.

Applying for a passport online in 2026 is completely free, registered through the Ministry of Public Security's Public Service Portal. The process only takes 10-15 minutes with 6 simple steps, from accessing the website to submitting the application. First-time passport applicants can choose to submit their application at the provincial level where they reside.

Documents needed to apply for a passport.

A valid original Citizen Identification Card (CCCD/CMND) is the only document required for a first-time passport application. For a second passport application, the old passport is required if it is still valid. Children under 14 years old need a birth certificate and parental consent certified by the People's Committee.

Passport collection time after online submission

Provincial-level passport processing takes 14 working days from the date of receipt of complete documents. Citizens can pick up their passports at the Provincial Immigration Management Department according to the scheduled SMS appointment. An expedited passport service (5 working days) costs 500,000 VND.

Electronic chip passports to be introduced in 2026.

100% of Vietnamese passports issued in 2026 will be equipped with an electronic chip containing biometric information. The chip stores fingerprints, facial images, and digital signatures, ensuring a high level of security. The fee for a chip passport is included in the 200,000 VND new issuance fee.

Alternative immigration portal

The portal https://hochieu.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/ supports online passport application forms. Citizens enter personal information, check, and submit the electronic form. This portal only supports the information entry step; application submission is still done through the Public Service Portal.
