Despite creating numerous opportunities and dominating possession for most of the game, Song Lam Nghe An failed to capitalize. A moment of sharpness from Hoang Anh Gia Lai decided the match, causing the Nghe An team to miss the chance to move closer to their goal of avoiding relegation.

Entering Round 21 of the V.League 2025/26, Song Lam Nghe An has a great opportunity to secure their survival in the league. With 24 points after 20 rounds, coach Van Sy Son's team is currently ranked 8th, creating a gap of 10 to 11 points from the bottom group. Given that their direct competitors haven't had good results in their early matches, a victory against Hoang Anh Gia Lai at Vinh Stadium would bring the Nghe An team very close to "safety".

Facing an opponent currently ranked 12th with 19 points and lacking consistency, Song Lam Nghe An entered the match with high determination. Coach Van Sy Son's chosen lineup featured a familiar core of key players, notably Le Nguyen Hoang replacing the suspended Hoang Van Khanh. The midfield, with Khac Ngoc and Quang Vinh, along with wingers Ngo Van Luong and Tran Manh Quynh, provided balance, while Olaha played a supporting role behind Dale Moore in attack.

Playing at home, Song Lam Nghe An didn't rush to increase the pace, opting instead for a cautious approach, gradually controlling the game. From the very first minutes, the team from Nghe An created significant pressure on the opponent's half. In the 5th minute, from a cross from the left wing, Dale Moore rose high to head the ball but lacked the power to beat goalkeeper Trung Kien.

The following minutes saw the home team dominate the game. Their attacks were mainly launched down the flanks, where Van Huy and Thanh Duc frequently delivered crosses that troubled the Hoang Anh Gia Lai defense. In the 10th minute, from a corner kick, Phan Ba Quyen had a chance to head the ball but it went wide.

The pressure was relentless. In the 14th minute, Ngo Van Luong made a skillful dribble down the left wing before unleashing a shot, but the ball narrowly missed the target. Shortly after, following a well-coordinated attack, Dale Moore had another close-range opportunity, but Trung Kien made a good save.

Despite having more possession and creating more chances, Song Lam Nghe An lacked precision in their final touches. Meanwhile, Hoang Anh Gia Lai created almost no noteworthy opportunities. It wasn't until the end of the first half that the visitors had their first dangerous shot, but it wasn't enough to trouble Cao Van Binh.

The first half ended goalless, but the game was clearly tilted in favor of the home team.

In the second half, Song Lam Nghe An continued to increase the pressure in hopes of finding the opening goal. In the 48th minute, Tran Manh Quynh made a dangerous run and delivered a cross, but no teammate was quick enough to finish. A few minutes later, Olaha had a clear opportunity with a shot from over 30 meters, but the ball unfortunately went wide of the goal.

While the home team was busy searching for a goal, they unexpectedly suffered a counter-attack. In the 59th minute, from a quick counter-attack, the Hoang Anh Gia Lai striker skillfully maneuvered before unleashing a shot from outside the penalty area. The ball flew powerfully into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Cao Van Binh with no chance to save it, opening the scoring for the visitors.

The conceded goal forced Song Lam Nghe An to push their formation higher. Coach Van Sy Son brought on additional attacking options such as Carlos Fortes and Le Dinh Long Vu to increase pressure. The game was now completely under the control of the home team, but the lack of sharpness continued to be a problem.

In the 64th minute, Tran Manh Quynh dribbled down the right wing before making a perfect pass to Dale Moore, but the striker's shot was blocked by the opposing defender. A few minutes later, from an attack down the left wing, the ball was crossed perfectly, but the appearance of Fortes inadvertently ruined the opportunity as he failed to finish successfully.

The clearest opportunity came in the final minutes of the match. Following a mistake by goalkeeper Trung Kien, the ball landed at Long Vu's feet in a favorable position, but his shot was too weak. In injury time, Olaha had a close-range header but it was again blocked by Trung Kien, before Manh Quynh followed up with a close-range shot but still couldn't find the net.

In the bad weather conditions with heavy rain, Song Lam Nghe An struggled to build up play. Their late-game efforts to press were unsuccessful, while Hoang Anh Gia Lai bravely defended their lead.

The match ended with a narrow defeat for the home team. This result meant Song Lam Nghe An missed a crucial opportunity to move closer to their goal of avoiding relegation.

Nevertheless, with the current points gap to the bottom of the table, the Nghe An team's chances of staying in the V.League are still very high. What they need now is to improve their ability to capitalize on opportunities, because if they continue to squander chances like in this match, their current advantages could be completely eroded in the final stages of the season.
