The US may spend $7 billion to expand an air base in Alaska.
Budget documents from the Pentagon show that the U.S. Air Force is proposing a large budget to expand a strategic air base in Alaska.
According to a review of Pentagon budget documents, RIA Novosti reported on May 4th that the US Air Force is requesting nearly $7 billion for a new project. The core objective is to build a modern fighter aircraft carrier complex. This facility will be located at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska.
This is a military base of particularly crucial importance. It is under the management of the U.S. Pacific Air Force Command (PACAF). Furthermore, this facility is considered one of the key bases for maintaining the U.S. military presence in the region.
The project is officially called Fighter Town Recapitalization. According to sources, the project will receive its first tranche of funding worth $2.066 billion. This budget is expected to be allocated in fiscal year 2027.
The Pentagon has determined that the base's current infrastructure is overloaded. It is no longer capable of handling the increasing workload of the fighter jet force.
To address this issue, the project will implement construction items including: new dedicated aircraft hangars for maintenance; a large-scale complex for storing conventional ammunition; and secure living quarters with a capacity for 320 military personnel.
The budget documents also clearly outline the project implementation roadmap. Specifically, the design and bidding process officially commenced in March of this year.
The actual construction phase is expected to begin in December 2027. According to the plan, all project components will be completed and handed over by December 2035.
