Ri6 durian prices in the Mekong Delta plummet, causing heavy losses for farmers.

According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, durian prices in the Mekong Delta region are currently plummeting, especially for the Ri6 variety, causing many farmers to suffer losses due to selling prices being lower than production costs. Competitive pressure from Thai durian and difficulties in exporting to China are the two main reasons.

According to observations at purchasing centers in the region in early May 2026, Ri6 durian of grade A was priced at 42,000 – 45,000 VND/kg, and grade B at around 30,000 VND/kg, a decrease of about 60% compared to more than a month earlier. Thai durian varieties also decreased by 50-60% but still maintained significantly high prices, with grade A at 100,000 VND/kg and grade B at around 80,000 VND/kg.

According to the Dong Thap Provincial Durian Association, the wholesale price for Ri6 durian at the farm gate is currently only 25,000-30,000 VND/kg, while Thai durian ranges from 50,000-60,000 VND/kg. With an average production cost of around 35,000 VND/kg, Ri6 farmers are losing 5,000-8,000 VND/kg, while Thai durian growers are still making a profit of 15,000-25,000 VND/kg.

Why has the price of durian dropped sharply?

One of the reasons for the sharp drop in durian prices is the regulation on controlling banned substances (yellow O) from the Chinese market. Many testing laboratories qualified to issue export codes have temporarily suspended operations, disrupting customs clearance and causing a surge in domestic inventory.

At the same time, Thailand – a direct competitor – is entering its peak harvest season with large production, abundant supply, and consistent quality. Thailand's supply advantage puts Vietnamese durian at a clear disadvantage in its main export market, China.

High domestic inventory levels are putting significant pressure on farmgate prices, especially for the Ri6 variety, which relies heavily on official export channels. Short-term supply chain disruptions are causing traders to drive down prices, resulting in growers having to sell below cost.

Durian export target for 2026

Vietnam's durian industry aims to achieve export revenue of $4-4.5 billion in 2026, after recording nearly $3.9 billion in 2025. This target reflects expectations of continued market expansion in China and diversification of consumer markets.

With current fluctuations in quality control and competition from Thailand, the target of $4-4.5 billion in export revenue faces many challenges. A comprehensive solution, ranging from controlling yellow O residue and restoring laboratory operations to expanding into new markets such as India, the EU, and the Middle East, is considered necessary to maintain growth momentum.

Thai durian is currently priced 30,000 to 60,000 VND/kg higher than Vietnamese Ri6 durian in the premium segment, depending on the purchasing area. This price difference reflects more consistent quality, a more preferred variety by China, and the brand advantage of Thai durian in the international market.

Vietnamese durian farmers growing Thai durian maintain a profit margin of 15,000 – 25,000 VND/kg, while Ri6 durian farmers in the Mekong Delta are losing 5,000 – 8,000 VND/kg. This profit difference may cause many farmers to consider switching varieties in subsequent seasons.
