Prices for OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 rice in the Mekong Delta edged up amid dwindling supplies from the winter-spring crop and export market expectations of a 1.5 million ton agreement with the Philippines.

The rice market in the Mekong Delta region on May 15th showed slight differentiation. While common rice varieties maintained stable prices, high-quality fragrant rice varieties began to show an upward trend due to reduced supply after the peak harvest of the Winter-Spring crop. However, cautious sentiment from both traders and businesses kept actual transaction volumes low.

Rice price trends in the Mekong Delta region.

Observations in key localities show that the price of fresh paddy rice for some varieties has increased by about 100-200 VND/kg compared to the beginning of the week. Specifically, the main fragrant rice varieties such as OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 are currently being purchased at high prices, ranging from 6,200 to 6,300 VND/kg.

Rice price survey conducted on May 15th at warehouses in the Western region:

Rice varietyPrice (VND/kg)
OM 18 rice6,200 – 6,300
Dai Thom 8 rice6,200 – 6,300
OM 5451 rice5,600 – 5,700
IR 50404 rice5,400 – 5,500

The main reason for the slight increase in rice prices is believed to be the significant reduction in supply from farmers. At major collection points in Dong Thap and Tien Giang provinces, the amount of marketable rice arriving at warehouses has gradually decreased, forcing traders to increase purchase prices to secure sufficient quantities for orders.

The raw rice market and trading sentiment are subdued.

In contrast to the slight increase in fresh paddy prices, the prices of raw and finished rice remained generally stable. Some varieties, such as OM 5451 and CL 555, showed signs of price increases at warehouses, but the volume of successful transactions was not significant. Export businesses are currently maintaining a cautious attitude, mainly buying to fulfill existing contracts rather than aggressively accumulating stockpiles.

Domestic consumption demand has not seen a significant surge during this period, which inadvertently puts pressure on the recovery of rice prices. Business circles believe the market lacks strong supporting factors to create a new price surge in the short term.

Export rice prices maintain a competitive advantage.

On the international stage, Vietnamese rice continues to maintain a stable position in the high-quality segment. According to data from the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the price of fragrant rice with 5% broken grains is currently maintaining a range of 510-520 USD/ton. Jasmine rice, in particular, fluctuates between 493-517 USD/ton depending on packaging specifications and niche markets.

Notably, information regarding a proposed agreement to supply approximately 1.5 million tons of rice between Vietnam and the Philippines is attracting significant attention from investors. While this is a positive sign for the export of Vietnamese rice, experts warn that maintaining the target price will face many challenges due to fierce competition from other cheaper sources in Southeast Asia and South Asia.

Overall, the rice market on May 15th is in a consolidation phase. Prices may continue to be supported by the scarcity of supply, but the real upward momentum still depends entirely on developments from major export contracts in the coming period.
