From June 1st, 2026, Vietnam will officially distribute E10 bioethanol fuel nationwide, replacing RON95 gasoline, marking a significant step in its green energy roadmap.

According to the planned roadmap, from June 1, 2026, E10 bioethanol will officially replace traditional RON95 gasoline nationwide. This is a key point stipulated in Circular 50/2025/TT-BCT issued in November 2025, aiming to realize the goal of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The transformation process spanned more than a decade.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan affirmed that this is an inevitable step in the national energy strategy. The decision to switch to E10 gasoline is not a sudden solution but has been formulated since Decision No. 53/2012/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister in 2012.

Although the initial roadmap was delayed due to practical factors, the legal framework and technical infrastructure are now sufficient for implementation. This policy also closely follows Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW of the Politburo on the orientation for national energy development until 2030, with a vision to 2045.

Compatibility of media and transition solutions

The biggest concern for consumers is the safety of E10 gasoline for engines. Joint studies by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, universities, and automotive and motorcycle manufacturing associations show that most vehicles currently in circulation in Vietnam are well-compatible with this type of gasoline.

To ensure a scientific basis, the Ministry of Industry and Trade collaborated with universities, engine experts, and automobile and motorcycle manufacturing associations to conduct a thorough assessment before issuing the E10 gasoline roadmap.

Notably, the regulatory body did not abruptly eliminate E5RON92 gasoline. This type of gasoline will continue to be used alongside E10 until at least 2030 to serve older vehicles or those not yet compatible with E10. Users of newer car models can confidently switch to E10 according to global standards.

Supply capacity and blending infrastructure

The Vietnamese petroleum market currently consumes approximately 1 million cubic meters per month. To meet this demand, the amount of E100 ethanol needed to blend E10 gasoline is estimated at 100,000 cubic meters per month.

  • Supply source:Domestic production meets approximately 25,000 m3, with the shortfall being covered by imports.
  • Distribution system:13 out of 26 major traders have invested in blending plants with a total capacity of over 1 million m3/month, sufficient to cover the entire market.
  • Quality:The Binh Son refinery will also participate in blending from June 2026. All gasoline batches in circulation must comply with national technical standards.

Multipurpose benefits of biofuels

The adoption of E10 gasoline brings tangible benefits in three main areas:

  1. Environment:Reducing CO2 emissions and other pollutants contributes to Vietnam's Net Zero commitment by 2050, as stated at COP26.
  2. Energy security:Reducing dependence on imported petroleum products, diversifying supply sources, and mitigating risks from fluctuations in international energy prices.
  3. Agricultural economics:Creating a stable output for raw materials such as cassava and sugarcane will help revive domestic ethanol plants and create jobs for farmers.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is committed to continuing to closely monitor the entire supply chain, from blending to retail, to ensure consumer rights and market stability during this crucial transition period.
