Born into a family with a rich artistic tradition, with her father being director Le Cong Lac and her mother being dancer Bich Lien, artist Van Dung experienced difficult childhood years in Thai Nguyen and Hanoi. Unlike her lively stage persona, she admits that as a child she was thin, dark-skinned, and had a mischievous, tomboyish personality.

The artist's most vivid memory is of the days when her family of four lived in a house renovated from an old warehouse, measuring only 6 square meters.2Located by Hoang Cau Lake in Hanoi, the harsh conditions of the subsidy era instilled in Van Dung a strong sense of independence from an early age. By the age of 10, she already knew how to carry water, clean the house, and cook meals to help her parents.

The turning point came from the 1992 Miss National pageant.
Possessing a slender figure, at the age of 16, Van Dung and her older sister Van Trang participated in the Miss Tien Phong Newspaper National Pageant (the predecessor of Miss Vietnam). Although she initially only went to support her sister, she successfully made it into the Top 15. However, instead of pursuing the glamour of being a beauty queen, she decided to return to her passion for theater.

In 1990, Van Dung was accepted into the Youth Theatre with a high score. In the early days, she started with the smallest supporting roles such as carrying flags or lifting heavy objects. Throughout 30 years of dedication, she has affirmed that a professional actress must cherish every opportunity to appear and strive to perform well in any role.
