Analyzing the reasons why France increased its nuclear warhead stockpile to 370 units.
Experts view France's plan to add 80 nuclear warheads by 2026 as a strategic move to strengthen its security leadership role in the European region.
According to the latest data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), France's nuclear arsenal has seen a significant increase, from 290 warheads in 2025 to 370 in 2026. This sudden increase of 80 units has attracted particular attention from international military observers, especially Russia.
Questions arise regarding the actual growth figures.
Strategic weapons expert Alexander Yermakov, from the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO RAS), believes this increase is most likely the result of technical recalculations. Yermakov stated that in previous reports, approximately 80 warheads were listed for dismantling or preparation for conversion. However, in the 2026 report, these units are now recorded as being in operational status.
This expert estimates that the actual number of units France has added may only be in the dozens. The announcement of a larger number may be intended to emphasize President Emmanuel Macron's efforts to realize his declaration of expanding the nation's nuclear arsenal.
Limitations regarding launch vehicles
Despite the increase in the number of warheads, analysts emphasize that France has not purchased any new launch vehicles. Currently, its sea-based deterrence capability relies on four ballistic missile submarines. Of these, three are regularly operational, while the remaining one is undergoing maintenance and repairs.
Yermakov's argument points out that France only has enough basic ammunition for these three submarines and lacks the space to quickly replenish a large quantity of new warheads. A slight increase could be achieved by filling the missile launchers on the submarines, which were not previously fully equipped.
Extended deterrence strategy in Europe
Paris's primary goal in boosting its nuclear capabilities is believed to be to assert its leadership role in Europe. President Macron's administration is shifting from a policy of national defense deterrence to a broader deterrence policy that includes allies in the region.
Russia assesses that France's slight increase in its nuclear arsenal does not pose a significant strategic threat in a full-scale nuclear conflict scenario with NATO. However, Moscow expresses dissatisfaction with France's coordinated training and preparation for the deployment of nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, alongside the US nuclear shield system.
