CyberMP is developing an open-source multiplayer mod for Cyberpunk 2077, featuring private servers, vehicle combat, and a promising dedicated anti-cheat system.

After CD Projekt Red officially abandoned plans to develop a multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077, the gaming community has found its own path. Project CyberMP, an ambitious fan-developed mod, is making significant technical progress towards bringing the online experience to Night City.

Gameplay orientation: Sandbox instead of traditional story.

Contrary to expectations of a synchronized co-op campaign, CyberMP focuses on building a sandbox-style open world. Instead of completing story missions together, players will join separate servers to interact, roleplay, and create community experiences, similar to the successful model of GTA Online.

The development team emphasizes that this platform is designed to be a flexible framework. In the future, the free-roam server package is expected to become open source, allowing users to host their own servers or use the source code to create entirely new game modes.

Dedicated server infrastructure and technical platform

One of the biggest challenges of the project was that Cyberpunk 2077 wasn't originally designed for multiplayer. To address this, CyberMP implemented extensive technical improvements:

  • Anti-fraud system:Because the original game lacks mechanisms to protect against cheats (trainers), the team is integrating a dedicated anti-cheat system directly into the platform.
  • New server architecture:The free server infrastructure has been rebuilt from scratch to improve stability and make it easier for other mod developers to create custom content.
  • Network synchronization:Improve connectivity between players and vehicles in a networked environment.

The outstanding features have been completed.

According to the latest report from the development team, approximately 200 technical bugs have been fixed. Important features such as character appearance synchronization, the new chat system, and in-game notifications (in-game overlay) are now stable. In particular, the combat and vehicle aspects have seen significant breakthroughs:

Footage from recent testing shows impressive synchronization capabilities in racing sequences and chaotic combat. The inclusion of Basilisk tanks demonstrates the team's ambition to make the most of the resources from the original game.

Launch and testing roadmap

Currently, CyberMP is still under active development and is not yet widely released for download. However, after a series of internal testing sessions, the developers are preparing for a semi-open test for selected participants.

If progress continues at this pace, CyberMP could become one of the most impressive community-created expansions, filling the void left by the official developers for Cyberpunk 2077 fans.
