Anbernic posted a hands-on video of the RG SP foldable gaming console, showcasing its ability to emulate GBA games with 3x the resolution, run PSP games smoothly, and support streaming from Steam.
Anbernic, the manufacturer of gaming devices, has officially released a video showcasing the Anbernic RG SP handheld console. Designed based on the legendary flip-style design of the Game Boy Advance SP, this new product not only boasts a retro look but also features the ability to emulate various platforms and offers many modern connectivity features.
Clamshell folding design and hardware specifications
The Anbernic RG SP boasts a distinctive clamshell design, reminiscent of the classic Game Boy Advance SP. The device is expected to be released in four color options: Platinum Silver, Graphite Black, Pearl Blue, and Pearl Pink. All color variants feature a metallic finish.
In terms of specifications, the RG SP features a 3.4-inch IPS display with a resolution of 720 × 480 pixels. It integrates 1GB of RAM and a 3,000 mAh battery, sufficient for continuous mobile gaming.
Cross-platform emulation and resolution upscaling capabilities.
The video demonstrates that the device runs many popular Game Boy Advance titles smoothly, such as Fire Emblem, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, and Pokemon Emerald. Notably, the Anbernic RG SP supports upscaling up to 3 times for GBA games, resulting in a sharper display.
Besides the GBA, the device also handles Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles well, such as Kirby's Dream Land 2, Pokemon Pinball, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. The device can also emulate higher-end systems including the PlayStation Portable (PSP), PS1, Nintendo 64, SEGA Saturn, and SEGA Dreamcast.
Features include connectivity, multiplayer, and game streaming.
In addition to retro emulators, the Anbernic RG SP can run a port of the game Stardew Valley. Users can also stream the PC game Cuphead: Don't Deal with the Devil directly from Steam to the device.
In terms of interactivity, the RG SP supports multiplayer online via the Netplay feature. The device also allows wireless image output to a TV screen and supports Bluetooth controller connectivity for solo play or playing with friends.
Currently, manufacturer Anbernic has not yet announced the official release date or specific price of the RG SP model.
