For many years, a significant number of users have believed that continuing to use a phone while it's charging will cause the battery to degrade faster and reduce the device's lifespan. This belief is so widespread that it has become a "technological myth," similar to the idea that charging a phone overnight is always harmful to the battery.

In fact, this is a fairly common misconception. Using your phone while charging doesn't directly degrade battery capacity over time. To extend the lifespan of a lithium-ion battery, users should pay more attention to usage habits that frequently expose the battery to high temperatures.

It's true that when using the device while charging, the charging process can be slower. This is because the charger has to simultaneously supply power to the tasks running on the device and charge the battery, instead of dedicating all its power to the charging process.

However, this only affects charging time, not battery lifespan.

When does using a phone while charging become harmful?

According to experts, the factor that can affect battery lifespan is not the act of charging and using simultaneously, but rather the amount of heat generated during that process.

If users perform demanding tasks such as playing high-graphics games, editing videos, or running resource-intensive applications while charging, the internal temperature of the device can increase significantly. Prolonged high temperatures are one of the main reasons why lithium-ion batteries age faster.

However, in most typical usage scenarios such as browsing the web, reading emails, texting, or checking social media, the amount of heat generated is usually not significant enough to affect battery health.

In other words, only when the phone is operating beyond its design limits while charging does it risk negatively impacting battery life.

In most smartphones today, when users plug in the charger while continuing to use the device, the power management system automatically allocates power. A portion of the power is used to charge the battery, while the remainder is supplied directly to the screen, processor, and other active components.
