Pham Xuan Manh: The unsung hero from Nghe An in the Vietnamese national team.

He didn't score, didn't provide an assist, and wasn't the most talked-about name after the 3-0 victory against Indonesia, but Pham Xuan Manh had a nearly perfect game. Playing as a left-sided center-back, the player from Nghe An quietly held firm in a crucial defensive area, contributing to Vietnam's solid performance at Pakansari Stadium.

Left axle stopper

In the starting lineup on the evening of August 3rd, coach Kim Sang-sik deployed Pham Xuan Manh in a three-man defense alongside Nguyen Thanh Chung and Bui Hoang Viet Anh. This is not the most familiar position for the 1996-born player, but his versatility helped him adapt quickly.

Playing on the left flank, outside of Xuan Manh's position is Nguyen Van Vi. On the other side of the pitch, this area frequently receives attacking moves from Eliano Reijnders pushing forward on the wing and Thom Haye moving into the center. The 1.96m tall center forward Mitchell Baker can also drift into this area to find space. Xuan Manh therefore has to handle multiple tasks simultaneously: pressing when the opponent brings the ball down the wing, covering the space behind Van Vi, maintaining distance from Nguyen Thanh Chung, and assisting in defending against aerial balls.

He accomplished that task with a decisive yet composed style of play. Xuan Manh wasn't drawn into the opponent's wide-ranging movements, proactively anticipating the ball and choosing the right moment to contest. His solidity, along with that of his teammates, left Thom Haye, one of Indonesia's most anticipated players, with little space to create chances; Mitchell Baker also failed to utilize his physical advantage.

Indonesia controlled possession more and had to push their formation higher after conceding two early goals, but most of their attacks were stopped before reaching the dangerous area. The three central defenders and goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang maintained their focus, helping the Vietnamese team keep a clean sheet against the pressure from the home team.

Xuan Manh's performance was rated 7.7 by Sofascore, the same as goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang and higher than the other two central defenders, Nguyen Thanh Chung and Bui Hoang Viet Anh. That score reflects an effective performance from a player who didn't need to create overly flashy moments.

Xuan Manh's role wasn't limited to defense. He participated in ball circulation from the back, readily moving the ball forward whenever space arose. His most significant attacking contribution came in the 42nd minute, when his cross found Nguyen Tai Loc; unfortunately, his subsequent header went wide of the post. This situation demonstrated Xuan Manh's proactiveness: when the team needed to drop deep, he acted as a defensive anchor; when opportunities arose, he was still able to step forward and support the attack.

The value of perseverance

Pham Xuan Manh was born in 1996 in Minh Thanh commune, formerly Yen Thanh district, now Van Du commune, Nghe An province. From youth football tournaments in his hometown, Xuan Manh was selected for the Song Lam Nghe An training academy, and gradually established himself in the first team and national teams. The football environment in Nghe An province instilled in him a strong physical foundation, a hardworking spirit, and the ability to play in multiple positions.

In the "Changzhou generation," the old Yen Thanh district boasts two players born in 1996, both having come through the Song Lam Nghe An youth academy: Phan Van Duc and Pham Xuan Manh. While Van Duc is remembered more for his unpredictable plays, goals, and attacking contributions, Xuan Manh built his position in a quieter way. He often appeared in less prominent roles: tackling, covering, man-marking, and readily playing in any position the coach needed him to.

At the 2018 AFC U23 Asian Championship, Xuan Manh was initially just a backup option. When Doan Van Hau was injured, he was used on the left flank, starting from the quarter-finals to the final and successfully fulfilling his role in Vietnam's historic journey. From a "substitute," the player from Nghe An gradually proved that versatility and adaptability can create a unique path for him.

After years of developing, competing, and establishing his name in the colors of Song Lam Nghe An, Xuan Manh moved to Hanoi FC from the 2023-2024 season. The qualities honed in the football environment of Nghe An province continued to help him adapt and maintain his form in his new team.

In the national team, Xuan Manh isn't always the center of attention, but in recent years he has consistently been featured in the coach's tactical plans.Coach Kim Sang-sikAt the 2024 ASEAN Cup, the defender from Nghe An province held a key position in the team and contributed to Vietnam's championship victory. At the 2026 ASEAN Cup, at the age of 30, he continues to be trusted in matches requiring experience, discipline, and tactical adaptability.

The 3-0 victory against Indonesia was decided by goals from Nguyen Van Vi, Nguyen Hai Long, and Nguyen Xuan Son. But for the attacking players to be able to attack with confidence, the team needed players willing to take on the defensive responsibilities. Xuan Manh is one of them.

Without needing to be in the spotlight, the player from Van Du commune has consistently affirmed his place in the national team with qualities honed at the Song Lam Nghe An academy. The match at Pakansari once again showed that in a strong team, value lies not only in the goalscorer, but also in the players who help the team maintain balance and stability throughout the 90 minutes.
