PNJ shares unexpectedly became the focus of attention as demand surged, driven by the news that a major investment fund officially became a major shareholder of the company.

Opening the trading session on the morning of August 20th, the market generally showed no significant changes, with capital inflows remaining cautious and demand primarily exploratory.

The VN-Index maintained its positive momentum and continued to widen its gains as continuous trading began. The main driving force came from easing selling pressure, while blue-chip stocks, especially VIC, played a significant supporting role for the index.

After more than an hour of trading, the VN-Index rose by over 8 points, with VIC contributing nearly 6 points. Most sectors showed gains, but the increase was still quite modest. Key sectors like banking and securities only rose by about 0.3%.

Among the notable stocks, PNJ unexpectedly attracted capital after news that the world's second-largest investment fund, represented by Sprucegrove Investment Management Ltd, officially became a major shareholder of the company. The stock briefly surged close to its ceiling price and is currently up about 4%, with the third-highest trading volume in the entire market.

The real estate sector showed divergence, with VIC (+1.2%), VHM (+1.01%), VRE (+0.41%), VPI (-1.12%), KDH (-1.15%), BCM (-1.93%), and NVL (-0.38%). Similarly, the banking sector saw divergence, with HDB (+0.37%), VPB (+0.2%), ACB (+1.15%), MBB (+1%), TCB (-0.15%), LPB (-0.99%), and STB (-0.27%).

Financial services group: VIX (+1.2%), SSI (+0.26%), VND (+0.63%), HCM (+0.2%), VCI (-0.95%), VCK (-0.3%), and TCX (+0.38%). Oil and gas group: PLX (-1.71%), BSR (-0.75%), PVS (+0.83%), PVD (-0.82%), and PVC (-0.83%).

At the close of trading, the VN-Index rose 5.12 points to 1,731.81 points (+0.3%) compared to the previous session. Similarly, the UPCoM-Index increased by 127.53 points (+0.51%), equivalent to 0.65 points. Meanwhile, the HNX-Index decreased by 278.31 points (-0.6%), equivalent to 1.67 points.

Market liquidity reached VND 4,802.6 billion, with 172 million shares traded. Across the sector, 138 stocks rose, 142 fell, and 59 dropped to their reference price.

According to experts at Asean Securities Company, the VN-Index is sending cautious signals as it closed at 1,727 points with a Spinning Top candlestick pattern below the MA10 and MA20 lines, reflecting that selling pressure remains dominant while demand is not strong enough to create a clear reversal.

Although the RSI indicator (14) at 42 shows weakening upward momentum, the money flow still maintains improvement with MFI reaching 60, creating a neutral tug-of-war between supply and demand.

In the base scenario, the market is likely to remain in a tug-of-war within the 1,715 - 1,735 point range, with some volatility appearing towards the end of the session due to the derivatives expiration event, but it is highly likely to hold firm at the 1,715 point support level.

Therefore, the optimal strategy at this time is to maintain an average portfolio weighting and avoid chasing rallies. Short-term investors should prioritize sectors with unique stories, such as state divestment, market upgrades, economic development resolutions, or the offshore cycle.

According to experts at AIS Securities Company, the VN-Index continues to fluctuate amidst persistently low market liquidity.

The main support came from the Infrastructure Services and Basic Consumer Goods sectors. Conversely, downward pressure was present in the Real Estate, Banking, and Securities sectors.

The current priority strategy remains risk management; investors should reduce their holdings of stocks that are weakening in price and avoid buying at the bottom prematurely.
