A collection of poems for children

PV September 6, 2026 14:32

Selected and introduced by journalist and poet Pham Thuy Vinh.

Goodbye summer, and the children are eagerly anticipating a new school year. This collection of poems is dedicated to them, as a gift for the first day of school.

We invite young readers to step into a world woven from familiar things, yet through the eyes of poets from Nghe An province, they become radiant, lovely, and full of evocative power. We hope this collection of poems will bring you joyful reading moments, innocent smiles, and a little more love for your homeland.

Listen to her tell stories.

The child lay there listening to Grandma tell stories.
Fairy tales of our country
The story of the hundred-jointed bamboo tree
The story of Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh

The story of the beautiful Tam
Hiding inside a persimmon
The Story of My Chau and Trong Thuy
Take the magic crossbow, my father.

Vietnamese fairy tales
There is a New Year's pole.
There are sticky rice cakes and glutinous rice cakes.
There was Cuoi lying under the banyan tree.

Vietnamese fairy tales
How amazing!
There is the goddess Nuwa.
Mending the sky and filling the sea

The child lay there listening to Grandma tell stories.
Many stories emerged.
There are benevolent spirits and fairies.
Restless during sleep.

Dad, why?

Dad, why is it sunny?
Ah, because the sun is diligent.
From early morning until late afternoon
Give us light so we can see.

Dad, why is it raining?
It is because the clouds take pity on the trees.
How many drops of sweet water?
Donate to ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams.

Dad, why is there wind?
Rustling banana trees and bamboo groves
That's a small, sky-powered fan.
To cool down the heat of a summer afternoon.

Dad, I understand now.
Sunshine and rain are companions to the wind.
All of them are near where I live.
Make each day more enjoyable.

The magic of chalk

Tiny pieces of chalk
I don't know how to sing.
But she gave me a picture.
Many miracles appeared.

Each and every stroke of the letter
Print on a blackboard
I mispronounce words.
We got used to it after a couple of times.

Her hands moved carefully.
Following the chalk lines in the coloring book.
So I learned to write.
The letter O, then the letter Ô...

Chalk for drawing flowers and leaves
Draw enough circles and squares.
Draw worms, insects, and birds.
Following the curve of her hand

This world is vast.
I understand more and more each day.
Deeply grateful.
Her hands and white chalk

The child mentioned the sun.

The sun is drunk.
Sleeping soundly all night.
Wrap yourself tightly in a soft cloud-like blanket.
To make the chickens wake up.

My mother went to plant rice.
The birds have all woken up.
I swept the playground clean.
The school bell rings, calling out.

The sun is no longer tired.
Spread the sunshine over the garden.
It's bustling everywhere.
So many new things

Remember, Mr. Sun?
You must wear a hat.
Don't expose yourself to the sun for too long.
Otherwise, you might get sick and be unable to get up.
