Nine centrally-governed cities will be established from September 20, 2026.
From September 20, 2026, Vietnam will have 9 centrally-governed cities, including: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Can Tho, Hue, Dong Nai, Quang Ninh, and Bac Ninh.
On August 24, 2026, at its first extraordinary session, the 16th National Assembly voted to approve the National Assembly Resolution on the establishment of Bac Ninh City. The Resolution takes effect from September 20, 2026.
Thus, as of September 20, 2026, Vietnam will have 9 centrally-governed cities, including: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Can Tho, Hue, Dong Nai, Quang Ninh, and Bac Ninh. These cities hold the role of special or type I urban areas, major economic, political, and cultural centers of the country.
