School Violence – Part 3: School – a safe haven

The sign with the words printed in large letters "When you are kidnapped, abused or when your friends are bullied, abused, call 111 or call the principal's phone number 0974..." is the idea of teacher Ho Anh Tuan - Principal of Quynh Phuong Secondary School (Hoang Mai Town). The teacher shared: "Once in Hanoi, I accidentally saw a sign with the above content hanging in front of a university gate. I think this can be applied in our school, but instead of just calling 111, I publicize my personal phone number, because if at school, students contact the principal, it will be easier to approach and handle the situation faster."

Since the principal's phone number was made public, teacher Ho Anh Tuan has had many other roles, sometimes as a counselor, sometimes as a peacemaker, sometimes as a father or mother to the students, or sometimes as a friend to the students.

In my phone, I currently keep a lot of messages from students, many of which are about conflicts in school life, and I always quickly communicate with students to prevent conflicts in school in time. I am also very happy when some students who have been reminded and analyzed by me know how to text me back to apologize.

In a coastal area like Quynh Phuong, due to difficult circumstances, families have many children, so caring for and supervising their children regularly is impossible for many families. That is why, when working as the principal of one of the schools with the largest number of students in the province (more than 1,600 students), what teacher Ho Anh Tuan worries about most is the situation of bullying and school violence, especially when social networks are developing and many students are not aware of their actions. Therefore, right from the beginning of working at the school, his number one priority was school security and moral education for students, considering it a prerequisite for improving overall quality.

Reality also shows that, despite many efforts and solutions, bullying and school violence are still at risk of happening at any time. Mr. Tuan himself also believes that, although conflicts within the school have been limited, outside the school fence, students have many other relationships and to limit this situation, there must be coordination between families, schools and departments.

To fully grasp the information, as a habit, many afternoons after work, the teacher rides his bike to the beach, chatting with parents and students. He is also the admin of the fanpage "I am Quynh Phuong" and this is where he can grasp a lot of information outside the school as well as share with parents and students the emerging issues and find solutions.

Most recently, in the face of increasing school violence, teacher Ho Anh Tuan has posted 4 articles on his fanpage to identify the situation, find the causes, reasons, and typical manifestations of violence against children, and propose solutions if violence occurs. He shared: It is no longer rare in high school for a student to be isolated and attacked by a group of friends, or even the whole class. What is more dangerous is that these groups of students collude to form closed groups on social networks to attack the victim, causing the victim to be mentally worn out and gradually fall into crisis.

“To some extent, we have not paid attention to the happiness index of students when they go to school, but only to their academic achievements. If we only focus on the results of exams as a measure of the quality of education and ignore emotional education for students, then they will lack soft skills to solve mental crises on their own. In reality, every school has student psychological counseling centers, but when students do not open up, where do teachers know to consult? There is currently a hotline 111, but I think this solution is only feasible for a small number of students. What about my students? When necessary, will the information through this hotline reach the authorities to intervene and prevent in a timely manner? Instead, I will be the one to receive and process the information to protect students. Over the past 4 years, all information students have reported has been received by teachers and thoroughly handled, regardless of the form. "Come on," said teacher Ho Anh Tuan.

The satellite army is a rather secretive force, but has been applied by Huynh Thuc Khang High School (Vinh City) for many years to support the school's Youth Union and homeroom teachers in grasping information from the classrooms. The deployment has also been effective, as from these armies, many conflicts and disagreements have been promptly reported to the school and from there, solutions have been found to resolve the problems.

Teacher Phan Xuan Hoai Linh - Secretary of the Youth Union of Huynh Thuc Khang High School said: "Conflicts at school age are inevitable. However, teachers cannot always reach out to students and students are also reluctant to share with teachers, even though every school has a school psychology counseling team. Therefore, in each class, we connect with a number of students so that they can grasp information from other classes, even groups. If there are any unusual problems, they will be reported to teachers."

Talking about this, teacher Doan Thi Thuy Chung - a Civic Education teacher and also a member of the advisory team at Huynh Thuc Khang High School said: “To deal with bullying and school violence, students need to be equipped with many skills. In particular, I also told them that they need to have the skills to seek help. We can seek help from relatives, parents, teachers or friends. I also advise them to treat each other in a civilized manner to build a safe school environment.”

Working at a special school with many students with average academic performance, many of whom are rebellious and have strong personalities, such as Nguyen Truong To High School (Vinh City), teacher Nguyen Luong Ngoc - Secretary of the school's Youth Union said: "Many parents when sending their children to our school, including many problem students, all say the same refrain "everything depends on the teacher". But in reality, it is necessary to have the support of the family, because the education of parents plays an extremely important role in shaping the personality and lifestyle of the children. The worrying issue is that nowadays every student has an account to log in to social networks. Many difficulties, big or small, even trivial, are shared by students on Facebook and accompanied by comments (multi-sided), sometimes creating negative reactions, giving rise to school conflicts".

After many years of working in the Youth Union, security work, and also working as a homeroom teacher and school psychology consultant, Mr. Ngoc also shared that: To be a good teacher, trusted by students, a teacher must be a Mother - Friend - Lawyer - Judge - Scientist. When being a mother, students trust. When being a friend, students share. When being a lawyer, students are protected. When being a judge, students are treated fairly. When being a scientist, students see the truth, faith, and enthusiasm. This requirement is also an inevitable requirement for teachers in the 4.0 era.

The reality in schools also shows that there are many causes leading to unsafe and unhealthy situations in schools, but the most prominent of which are problems arising from the students themselves. To limit this situation, building a standard school cultural environment is a necessary factor to help prevent and stop unsafe, unhealthy and unfriendly situations in schools. In recent years, recognizing this problem, schools in Nghe An have had many diverse activities such as organizing healthy collective activities, organizing extracurricular activities to teach life skills for students. Propaganda and education for students about school violence is carried out in many diverse and rich forms through the main subjects, education, ethics, and life skills. The Department has also required educational institutions to have a school psychological counseling room and arrange staff and teachers to be in charge of psychological counseling for parents and students.
