Quynh Luu holds field workshop on GS9 3-line hybrid rice.

(Baonghean.vn) -On the morning of May 16th, Dai Thanh Joint Stock Company, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district and Lam Cau Cooperative - Quynh Thach commune, organized a field workshop to evaluate the results of GS9 three-line hybrid rice production in the Spring crop of 2013.

GS9 three-line hybrid rice is a hybrid rice variety created by Agritech Group – Philippines, and recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in August 2011. In the Spring of 2013, Dai Thanh Joint Stock Company conducted a trial planting of GS9 rice at Lam Cau Cooperative, Quynh Thach commune, on an area of ​​10 hectares.

The growing season for the spring crop is 125-130 days, and for the autumn crop 105-110 days. The seedlings are strong, cold-tolerant, and resistant to lodging, with good resistance to bacterial leaf blight in the autumn crop. The rice grains are long, and the cooked rice is flavorful, soft, and firm. The average yield is 7.5 tons/ha, and with good intensive farming practices in the spring crop, it can reach over 14 tons/ha. Although the weather in the spring of 2013 was complex and unfavorable for rice growth, with severe cold during the seedling stage affecting pollination and grain setting, observations showed that the GS9 rice variety had a shorter growing season (3 days shorter than the control variety), grew well, tillered vigorously, flowered uniformly, had good lodging resistance, and was resistant to weather conditions without pest or disease outbreaks.

Speaking at the workshop, the leader of Quynh Luu district requested that the seed supplier, in addition to highlighting the advantages, also mention the disadvantages of the GS9 rice variety; cooperatives and farmers conducting trial plantings should provide a clearer assessment of this rice variety. Although the rice has relatively good lodging resistance, further trials should be conducted in subsequent seasons on a larger scale in various localities to obtain a more objective and accurate evaluation.
