Enhancing pedestrian safety

(Baonghean.vn) -In accordance with Plan No. 94/KH-UBATGTQG dated April 22, 2013, of the National Traffic Safety Committee, on May 4, the Provincial People's Committee issued Plan No. 192/KH-UBND-NC on organizing the second Road Safety Week in the province with the theme "Improving safety for pedestrians".


Accordingly, the second Road Safety Week in Nghe An will be held from May 6th to May 12th, 2013, with the following contents: Disseminating traffic rules for pedestrians; Regulations on yielding the right of way to pedestrians; Regulations on penalties for pedestrians violating traffic safety laws; Causes and consequences of traffic accidents involving pedestrians.

Improving pedestrian transport infrastructure, including upgrading road signage systems (traffic lights, signs, road markings) for pedestrians; clearing urban sidewalks and road shoulders to facilitate pedestrian access; increasing lighting in pedestrian areas; and enhancing traffic safety in school areas.

Guide pedestrians to cross the road at designated crossing points and obey traffic light signals; guide drivers of motor vehicles to voluntarily comply with legal regulations regarding yielding the right of way to pedestrians.

Administrative penalties will be imposed on pedestrians and drivers of motor vehicles who fail to yield to pedestrians.

The units participating in the second Road Safety Week include: the Standing Committee of the Provincial Traffic Safety Board, the Provincial Police, the Department of Transport, the Department of Education and Training, the Sub-committee on Legal Propaganda (Department of Justice), the Department of Information and Communications, the Provincial Radio and Television Station and press agencies, the People's Committees of districts, cities and towns, and social organizations...

According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Ky, Director of the Department of Transport and Communications and Deputy Head of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, the second Road Safety Week, themed "Improving Safety for Pedestrians," aims to raise awareness and compliance with traffic safety laws among pedestrians, while also warning about potential traffic accident risks; creating conditions to ensure adequate traffic infrastructure for pedestrian safety; and encouraging drivers of motorized vehicles to proactively yield to pedestrians in accordance with regulations. The goal is to ensure no pedestrian fatalities from traffic accidents between May 6th and May 12th, 2013, and to reduce traffic accidents involving pedestrians throughout 2013.
