Eating four containers of yogurt a week can reduce the risk of diabetes by more than 28%, according to a study by the University of Cambridge (UK).

Scientists conducted a detailed survey of the daily eating habits of over 4,000 Britons. After 11 years, 753 of them developed type 2 diabetes.

Studies show that people who consume more low-fat fermented dairy products such as yogurt, fromage frais, and low-fat cheeses are generally 24% less likely to develop the disease than others. When studied separately, yogurt has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by about 28%, with the greatest effect when eating about 4.5 containers (125g containers) per week.

Commenting on the new findings, Dr. Nita Forouhi of the Cambridge University Centre for Epidemiological Research stated: “This study highlights the important role of specific foods in preventing type 2 diabetes. In the context of growing evidence showing that long-term consumption of added sugars and sugary drinks is harmful to health, information about other foods like yogurt and low-fat fermented dairy products that may help the body fight the disease is a positive sign.”

In a publication in the journal Diabetologia, the study did not provide a reason why yogurt helps lower the risk of diabetes, but suggested that people who eat yogurt regularly may maintain a healthier lifestyle in other aspects. At the same time, the scientists also hypothesized that beneficial bacteria and a special form of vitamin K may provide a shield to help the body fight against diabetes.

Dairy products are a source of protein, vitamins, and essential minerals, but they are also high in saturated fat. Therefore, experts advise people not to consume too much of them and to choose low-fat options.
