4 boxes of yogurt per week reduce the risk of diabetes
Four cups of yogurt a week can reduce the risk of diabetes by more than 28%, according to results from a study by Cambridge University (UK).
Scientists looked closely at the eating habits of more than 4,000 Britons. Over 11 years, 753 of them developed type 2 diabetes.

Research shows that people who consume a lot of low-fat fermented dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese and low-fat cheese are generally 24% less likely to develop the disease than those who do not. When studied separately, yogurt has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by about 28%, with the greatest effect when eating about 4.5 containers (125g) per week.
Commenting on the new findings, Dr Nita Forouhi, from the Cambridge Centre for Epidemiology, said: “This study highlights the important role that individual foods play in preventing type 2 diabetes. In a context where there is growing evidence that long-term consumption of added sugars and sugary drinks is harmful to health, the news that other foods such as yogurt and low-fat fermented milk products may help protect against disease is a positive sign.”
The study, published in the journal Diabetologia, does not explain why yogurt lowers the risk of diabetes, but suggests that people who eat yogurt regularly may lead healthier lifestyles in other ways. The researchers also hypothesize that probiotics and a special form of vitamin K may provide a shield against diabetes.
Dairy products are an important source of protein, vitamins and minerals, but they are also high in saturated fat. Therefore, experts recommend that people should not eat too much and should choose low-fat products.
