This Muslim country with strict religious laws will have an "open door" event for women, under the request of the AFC.

According to the Saudi Gazzette, for the first time in history, women will be allowed to enter a football stadium in Saudi Arabia to watch a match. However, this is not really a matter of fairness for Saudi Arabian officials.

Only female Western Sydney Wanderers fans will be allowed into the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, where the home team is Al-Hilal FC. The match is part of the AFC Champions League and will take place on November 1.

Adnan al-Moaibid, spokesman for the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), said that allowing female fans of the visiting team to enter the stadium was not their decision, but a request from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which is in charge of organizing the tournament. He said that SAFF will strictly cooperate with the regulations set by FIFA and AFC.

This could very well be a milestone in the country’s progress towards equality in the future. King Abdullah recently announced that women will be allowed to vote in local elections from 2015.
