For the first time in history, women are allowed to watch football in Saudi Arabia.

This Islamic country, with its strict religious laws, will have an "open door" event for women, at the request of the AFC.

According to the Saudi Gazzette, for the first time in history, women will have the right to enter football stadiums in Saudi Arabia to watch a match. However, this is not a genuine sign of fairness from Saudi officials.

To be precise, only female fans of Western Sydney Wanderers will be allowed into the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh. The home team is al-Hilal FC. The match is part of the AFC Champions League and will take place on November 1st.

Adnan al-Moaibid, spokesperson for the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), affirmed that allowing female fans of the visiting team into the stadium was not their decision, but a request from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) – the organizers of the tournament. He stated that the SAFF will strictly comply with the rules set by FIFA and the AFC.

This could very well be a milestone in the country's future progress towards equal rights. Recently, King Abdullah announced that women will have the right to vote in local elections starting in 2015.
