The railway accident occurred at 11:50 p.m. on December 24 at a civilian level crossing at km 261 +200 (North-South railway) in Dien Truong commune, Dien Chau district (Nghe An).

At the above time, taxi with license plate 37A 141.01 carrying 3 other passengers was traveling on National Highway 1A, suddenly turned into a residential road to take passengers to play Christmas. Although there was a sign warning cars not to pass, the taxi driver (identity unknown) still drove the car through, just as the car's low chassis got stuck on the rail, the Thong Nhat train number SE2 from Saigon rushed by. Discovering the train, the driver opened the door and shouted for the 3 passengers in the car to jump out before the train rushed forward, hitting the taxi and flying 50m into the field, the car was severely damaged.

Immediately after the accident, the train made an emergency stop, causing the train's journey to be delayed by 25 minutes.
