At the time of the incident, a taxi with license plate 37A 141.01, carrying three passengers, was traveling on National Highway 1A when it suddenly turned onto a local road to take passengers out for Christmas. Despite a warning sign prohibiting cars from crossing, the taxi driver (whose identity is unknown) proceeded. Just as the low-profile vehicle became stuck on the railway tracks, the SE2 Thong Nhat train, traveling from Saigon, approached. Upon seeing the train, the driver opened the doors and shouted for the three passengers to jump out before the train struck the taxi, sending it flying 50 meters into a field and causing significant damage.
Immediately after the accident occurred, the train made an emergency stop for handling, causing a 25-minute delay in its journey.
