Landslides and flash floods claim the lives of 53 people in the Philippines.

(Baonghean.vn) - The Philippine disaster relief agency reported that heavy rains across a wide area this morning, December 31st, caused landslides and flash floods in the central and southern provinces of the Philippines, resulting in at least 53 deaths.

Tropical storm Jangmi forced more than 86,000 people in the provinces of Surigao del Sur, Bohol, and Cebu to evacuate before weakening into a tropical depression.

According to a United Nations report, the powerful storm Hagupit killed 18 people this month and forced more than 1 million people to evacuate to shelters – the world's largest peacetime evacuation.

The worst floods in Malaysia's history, which occurred more than a decade ago, forced over a quarter of a million people to leave their homes. The Malaysian government is now actively rectifying the mistakes resulting from poor disaster preparedness, according to Malaysian officials.
