Nghe An has a 419km long national land border, adjacent to 3 provinces of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (accounting for nearly 1/4 of the length of the Vietnam-Laos border), with 116 renovated and thickened border markers and 44 markers. In addition, there is 1 international border gate (Nam Can, Ky Son); 1 main border gate (Thanh Thuy, Thanh Chuong), 3 secondary border gates; 3 border openings; 12 border crossing points allowing residents of the 2 Vietnam-Laos border areas to visit relatives and exchange goods.

The system of border gates, openings, and border crossing points is located in 6 districts and 27 border communes with a total population of 21,809 households/112,116 people. People's lives in border areas are still lacking and backward, transportation is difficult, and understanding and implementation of state management functions on border gates and land borders by localities and units are still limited. Violations of regulations on export, import, transit; border entry and exit and import and export of goods; criminal activities, especially crimes of illegal trading and transportation of drugs, weapons, explosives, etc., are still complicated.
