| Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Cu, Deputy Director of the Border Gate Department of the Border Guard Command, requested the People's Committee of Nghe An province to pay attention to investing in infrastructure for border gates. |
Nghe An province has a 419km long land border with three provinces of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (accounting for nearly a quarter of the length of the Vietnam-Laos border), with 116 national border markers that have been restored and reinforced, and 44 boundary posts. In addition, there is one international border gate (Nam Can, Ky Son); one main border gate (Thanh Thuy, Thanh Chuong), three secondary border gates; three border crossings; and 12 border crossing points allowing residents of the two border areas of Vietnam and Laos to cross to visit relatives and exchange goods.
The system of border gates, crossings, and entry points is located in 6 districts and 27 border communes, with a total population of 21,809 households/112,116 people. The lives of people in the border area are still lacking and backward, transportation is difficult, and the understanding and implementation of state management functions regarding border gates and land borders by local authorities and units remain limited. Violations of regulations on import, export, and transit; entry and exit in border areas; and import and export of goods; and the activities of various types of crime, especially the illegal trafficking and transportation of narcotics, weapons, and explosives, remain complex.
