A group of American engineers (the Roar group) has successfully developed a smart, compact device that can be discreetly camouflaged in many locations on the user's body, shaped like a piece of jewelry and capable of sending warning signals to friends or relatives in case the wearer is in a dangerous situation.

Pepper spray, electric batons or super bright flashlights… are all useful tools chosen by many consumers, especially women, to defend against attacks, sexual harassment or even violence. However, due to their bulky nature, carrying these items around often causes a lot of inconvenience and trouble.

The new device, called Athena, is designed in a circular shape and compact in size so that users can wear it around their neck like a piece of jewelry, attach it to a belt or put it in a handbag, backpack, etc. This device connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth. On the front of the device, there is an activation button that allows sending messages, distress signals or emergency contacts as well as the user's current location via phone to the emergency number of relatives or friends that has been pre-installed.

To avoid accidental touching, which can lead to false alarms, the device's activation button is designed to be concave below the surface and the user must press and hold the button for 3 seconds continuously for the emergency function to be activated. The device can be set to alarm mode, so when activated, the siren sounds at a volume of 85 decibels to attract the attention of people around.

If you feel safe, you can turn off the alert feature on your phone's app. The Roar team is currently researching and setting up a silent mode, allowing the ability to send out distress signals without causing an alarm.

The product is expected to be available on the market in May 2016 with an estimated price of 75 USD/product.
