A group of American engineers (the Roar team) has successfully developed a smart, compact device that can be discreetly concealed in various locations on the user's body, resembling a piece of jewelry, and capable of sending a warning signal to friends or family if the wearer encounters a dangerous situation.

Pepper spray, stun guns, or super-bright flashlights… these are all useful tools chosen by many consumers, especially women, for self-defense against attacks, sexual harassment, or even violence. However, due to their bulky nature, carrying these items often causes considerable inconvenience and trouble.

The new device, called Athena, is designed in a circular shape and is compact enough for users to wear it around their neck like jewelry, attach it to their belt, or carry it in a handbag or backpack. It connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth, and a button on the front activates it, allowing users to send messages, distress signals, or emergency contacts, as well as their current location, to pre-set emergency numbers of family or friends.

To prevent accidental contact that could trigger a false alarm, the device's activation button is designed to be recessed below the surface, and users must press and hold the button continuously for 3 seconds to activate the emergency function. The device can be set to alarm mode, so when activated, the siren sounds at a volume of 85 decibels to attract the attention of those nearby.

If users feel safe, they can turn off the alert feature on their phone app. The Roar research team is currently working on developing a silent mode, allowing for the transmission of distress signals without triggering an alarm.

The product is expected to be available on the market in May 2016 at an estimated price of $75 per unit.
