Roof of the world covered in graffiti by Chinese tourists
The list of tourists who drew graffiti on the 'roof of the world' will be announced in the media at the end of May 2016.
According to Xinhua, the country's Domestic Tourism Administration posted photos of a series of landmarks and signs on the way to Mount Everest, filled with drawings, signatures and many souvenirs such as "I've been here".
The staff regularly clean and erase these stains, but soon the stone surface is covered with new drawings and writings. The most heavily defaced are the ones in the Base Camp area, where tourists often stay.
The Chinese government has decided to tackle the problem of Chinese tourists writing graffiti on Mount Everest, just before the tourist season. Accordingly, the government has decided to build new stone monuments for tourists who want to leave their personal mark.

Gu Chunlei, a Chinese tourism official, said the government would create a blacklist and impose strict penalties on violators. Since visitors must register their information before climbing the mountain, it would not be too difficult for the authorities to identify individuals who write graffiti on public buildings on the way to the summit.
