According to Xinhua, the country's Domestic Tourist Administration has posted photos of the markers and signs along the Everest summit covered in drawings, signatures, and other commemorative marks such as "I've been here before."
The staff regularly have to clean and remove these stains, but soon after, the stone surfaces are covered with new drawings and writings. The gravestones in the Base Camp area are the most soiled because this is where tourists often rest.
The Chinese government implemented measures to address the problem of Chinese tourists vandalizing Mount Everest with graffiti just before the tourist season. Accordingly, the government decided to construct new stone markers specifically for tourists wishing to leave their personal mark.
