According to a preliminary report from the Nghe An Food Safety and Hygiene Department, inter-agency teams inspected 6,895 food production and business establishments, of which 565 were found to be in violation. Fines totaling 13,200,000 VND were imposed on 23 establishments and paid into the State treasury. On-site destruction of confectionery, sausages, ham, and alcoholic beverages from 34 establishments was also ordered, estimated at approximately 10 million VND.

Specifically, the Food Safety and Hygiene Sub-Department conducted tests on 10 samples of watermelon seeds sold at Vinh market, and found that 8 samples were dyed with Phosphamine B. This is an additive on the Ministry of Health's list of banned substances for use in food processing; excessive use can cause liver and kidney failure and cancer.

According to health authorities, people should avoid consuming watermelon seeds during Tet (Lunar New Year). If they do consume them, they should only buy them from reputable establishments with clear origins and expiration dates.
