Prolonged heavy rains have destroyed more than 30 meters of the Great Wall of China, which dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).XinhuaThe announcement was made on August 7th.
The excavation work by workers in a square near a historical site in Zhangjiakou city, Hebei province, northern China, is also believed to have contributed to the collapse of the ancient city wall.
"There is currently an investigation into the cause of the wall collapse. Among the factors that may have contributed to the collapse are construction issues."TelegraphAccording to a city official, the officials also stated that "conservation and reconstruction work is underway."
The Great Wall of China, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, was built in the 7th century BC to defend against foreign invaders. More than 50 wars have taken place at Zhangjiakou over the centuries, and a collapsed section of the wall was rebuilt in 1484 during the Ming Dynasty.
By last October, 700 meters of ancient wall had collapsed in Laiyuan County, Hebei Province, due to dozens of mines springing up nearby, some as close as 100 meters from the historical site.
