Prolonged heavy rain has destroyed more than 30 meters of the Great Wall from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644),Xinhuaannounced on August 7.
Workers digging up a square near a historical site in Zhangjiakou city, Hebei province, northern China, is also believed to have caused the collapse of the ancient city wall.
"There is currently an investigation into the cause of the wall collapse. Among the factors that could have caused the collapse are construction work,"Telegraphquoted a city official as saying. Officials also said that "preservation and reconstruction work is underway."
The Great Wall, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, was built in the 7th century BC to defend against foreign invaders. Over 50 wars have been fought at Zhangjiakou over the centuries, and a collapsed section of the wall was rebuilt in 1484 during the Ming Dynasty.
By October last year, 700 meters of ancient wall had collapsed in Laiyuan County, Hebei Province due to dozens of mines springing up nearby, some just 100 meters from the relic.
