Dozens of ambulances and fire engines rushed to the scene, the BBC reported. Rescue workers used special cutting equipment and cranes to remove the injured from the two trains.

Claudia Gigler, a spokeswoman for the Emergency Services, said it was unclear why the trains had come to be on the same track, while Austrian railways spokeswoman Sarah Nettel said they would investigate but “our priority now is the passengers”.

According to AFP, it took nearly two hours for rescue teams to evacuate both trains from the tracks.
