Secrets to keeping vegetables fresh for a long time

Vegetables spoil very quickly. But if you know how, you can keep them fresh for a long time.

- Wrap drained vegetables in paper towels before placing them in a plastic bag. This works well with lettuce and celery. It will keep them fresh for at least a week.

- Make sure the tissue is not too wet. If it is wet, replace it with a new, dry tissue.

- After slicing potatoes or onions, cover the cut part with a paper towel and put it back in a zip-lock plastic bag.

- Fresh, clean carrots can stay fresh if wrapped tightly in a plastic bag to prevent evaporation or stored in an airtight container. They can last a week or longer.

- Potatoes, onions, ginger, garlic and sweet potatoes should be stored in a dark place or in a dark bag because sunlight makes them sprout and become inedible. In stores these vegetables are often displayed in the light and this is not good for them.

- Most vegetables will stay fresh longer if kept in a place where they don't get much water.

Note:

- The above method is also effective in keeping ice cream from freezing. Just wrap a pillowcase in it and place it inside the ice cream box.

Bags or boxes used to store vegetables must be washed and dried before use.
