An Giang creates rice varieties that are flood and drought tolerant.
After more than two years of implementation (from April 2011 to present), An Giang province has successfully researched the scientific topic "Selecting and creating rice varieties with good quality, the ability to withstand flooding, drought and major pests and diseases for An Giang province".
The project is chaired by Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lang - senior researcher of the Mekong Delta Rice Institute.
The project has helped An Giang province initially create promising rice varieties for production in the context of climate change. From there, it is the basis for the province to select 24 rice varieties for field testing, and then select 2-3 new rice varieties to register as national varieties.

Specifically, the project has researched and created rice varieties that can withstand flooding, drought, major pests and diseases and have good quality such as Swarna sub 1, IR64 Sub 1; short-term drought-resistant varieties such as OM 4900, OM 6162; can withstand flooding for 10 - 20 days, major pests and diseases and imported varieties such as WAB 880-138- 18- 20- P- HB... These rice varieties have a growing period of less than 90 days, produce rice with a chalky rate of less than 5%, and whole rice over 50%...
To achieve this result, the project focused on collecting and analyzing 100 local seasonal rice varieties and 44 short-term high-yield rice varieties./.
