After more than two years of implementation (from April 2011 to the present), An Giang province has successfully researched the scientific project "Selection and breeding of high-quality rice varieties with flood tolerance, drought tolerance, and resistance to major pests and diseases for An Giang province".

The research project is led by Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lang - a senior researcher at the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute.

This research has helped An Giang province initially create promising rice varieties for production under changing climate conditions. This has provided a basis for the province to select 24 varieties for field trials, with the goal of selecting 2-3 new rice varieties for national registration.

Specifically, the project has researched and developed rice varieties capable of withstanding flooding and drought, resistant to major pests and diseases, and possessing good quality, such as Swarna sub 1, IR64 Sub 1; short-day varieties with good drought tolerance such as OM 4900, OM 6162; varieties capable of withstanding flooding for 10-20 days, resistant to major pests and diseases; and imported varieties such as WAB 880-138-18-20-P-HB... These rice varieties have a growth period of less than 90 days, yield rice with a chalky grain percentage of less than 5%, and whole grain percentage of over 50%...

To achieve these results, the study focused on collecting and analyzing 100 local seasonal rice varieties and 44 short-day, high-yield rice varieties.
