The seafood fishing season is bustling in Quynh Lap.
(Baonghean.vn) -Visiting Quynh Lap commune (Quynh Luu district) these days, we witnessed the bustling and lively atmosphere of the fishermen during the seafood harvesting season.
After typhoon number 2, the large ships are anchored for maintenance, repairs, and preparation of fishing gear, provisions, and food, waiting to set sail in a few days. Meanwhile, the smaller boats continue to go out to sea every night to catch squid and fish, bringing in a considerable income.
Early in the morning, Nguyen Van Tuan's small boat from Quyet Tien village (Quynh Lap) docked. Despite being tired after a night at sea, everyone on board was happy because they had caught a considerable amount of fish and squid the previous night. As soon as the seafood was unloaded, buyers came to purchase it all. After deducting expenses, each member of Tuan's crew received nearly 400,000 dong. Along with Tuan's boat, dozens of other boats belonging to fishermen from Quynh Lap docked one after another. The buying and selling activity at the docks became increasingly lively.

On his large boat anchored in the harbor, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong was busy mending some fishing nets and checking the high-pressure lighting system. Through conversation, we learned that he had bought this boat less than a year ago for nearly 2.5 billion VND. His boat has 14 crew members, and their last fishing trip yielded a relatively large catch. After deducting expenses, each person earned over 3 million VND. During the "lunar rest period," everyone is resting and recuperating so they can head out to sea again in a few days.
Mr. Huong said: About five years ago, fishermen in Quynh Lap mainly used small, rudimentary boats to fish. Due to limitations in the capacity and durability of the fishing vessels, they did not dare to venture far out to sea, only fishing about 10 nautical miles from the shore. This resulted in very low productivity and yields, and they frequently faced risks. Therefore, despite living near the sea and having abundant marine resources, the lives of the people in Quynh Lap remained poor. In recent years, thanks to changes in their farming methods, the people have boldly borrowed capital and pooled funds to purchase large, modern boats and improve fishing gear, resulting in a significant increase in productivity and seafood yields.
The lives of the fishermen have improved; many families have built sturdy and spacious houses and acquired modern amenities. Having accumulated capital, they continue to invest in purchasing modern boats to improve the efficiency of fishing and seafood exploitation. Currently, the entire Quynh Lap commune has approximately 150 large-capacity boats (worth over 2 billion VND), not including hundreds of smaller boats.

Along with investing in fishing vessels, seafood processing facilities in Quynh Lap are also being invested in and are beginning to yield positive results. Along the beach, 3-4 seafood processing facilities have appeared, mainly processing dried fish and fishmeal. We visited the dried fish processing facility (mainly anchovies) owned by Mr. Le Van Chau. The fish are sorted right on the boat before being brought to the dock. From the dock, the fish are transported to the warehouse by conveyor belt. Here, after being cleaned, the fish are thoroughly steamed, then dried. Once completely dry, the fish are carefully packaged for partners to transport to localities within and outside the province for consumption.

According to Mr. Le Van Chau, to complete this fish processing line, he raised capital from relatives, friends, and borrowed from the bank, totaling over 1 billion VND. The site was previously a swampy area, so he had to rent a sand dredge and build embankments to construct the processing facility. Then came the investment in purchasing equipment and machinery, and training workers to operate the facility. Currently, his processing facility provides regular employment for over 60 workers with an average income of 4-5 million VND per person per month. Therefore, while women from Quynh Lap used to go to the South to work as factory workers or for overseas labor, most have now stayed in their hometown to work and live.
From Quynh Lap beach, one can see boats anchored close together, and bustling trading activity; looking towards the village, one sees well-built, prosperous houses lining the hillside. Thanks to their reliance on the sea and innovative business practices, the lives of the people in Quynh Lap are improving day by day.
