Removing a 2.6 kg tumor
(Baonghean.vn) -On the morning of August 29, Nghe An Oncology Hospital coordinated with experts from Hanoi Medical University to perform surgery on a patient with a thyroid tumor weighing up to 2.6 kg.
Patient Vo Van Canh before surgery
The patient is Mr. Vo Van Canh, born in 1984, residing in Duc Lang Commune, Duc Tho District, Ha Tinh Province. The patient was admitted to the hospital on August 15 and was diagnosed by doctors at Nghe An Oncology Hospital with a goiter since childhood, which was not treated promptly and the goiter gradually grew larger, compressing the nerves, causing mental retardation. By the time he was admitted to the hospital, the patient's goiter had grown to both sides of the neck, compressing the trachea, and growing deep into the base of the skull.
This is a rare case and surgery is considered very difficult because the tumor area has many blood vessels that are not easy to separate.
At 9:30 a.m., patient Vo Van Canh was taken to the operating room. By 2 p.m. the same day, the surgery was successfully completed. The removed tumor weighed 2.6 kg. This is the patient with the largest thyroid tumor that Nghe An Oncology Hospital has ever encountered (the second largest in Vietnam).
Surgery to remove giant thyroid tumor weighing 2.6kg
Since its establishment, Nghe An Oncology Hospital has operated on over 1,000 cases of goiter, including 6 cases of giant goiter. The vast majority of patients with giant goiter are ethnic minorities in the mountainous areas of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces. Many people have had goiter for a long time, sometimes up to 30-40 years, until the goiter grows too large and then they seek treatment, making the surgery very difficult.
