A 2.6 kg tumor was surgically removed.
(Baonghean.vn) -On the morning of August 29th, Nghe An Oncology Hospital, in collaboration with experts from Hanoi Medical University, performed surgery on a patient with a thyroid goiter weighing 2.6 kg.

Patient Vo Van Canh before undergoing surgery.
The patient is Mr. Vo Van Canh, born in 1984, residing in Duc Lang commune, Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh province. He was admitted to the hospital on August 15th and diagnosed by doctors at the Nghe An Oncology Hospital with a goiter he had suffered from since childhood. Due to a lack of timely treatment, the goiter had grown larger, compressing nerves and causing intellectual disability. By the time he was admitted, the goiter had spread to both sides of his neck, compressing the trachea and extending deep into the base of the skull.
This is a rare case, and the surgery is considered very difficult because the tumor area has many blood vessels that are not easy to dissect.
At 9:30 AM, patient Vo Van Canh was taken to the operating room. By 2 PM the same day, the surgery was successfully completed. The removed tumor weighed 2.6 kg. This is the largest thyroid tumor that the Nghe An Oncology Hospital has ever encountered (the second largest in Vietnam).

Surgery to remove a giant 2.6kg thyroid tumor.
Since its establishment, Nghe An Oncology Hospital has performed over 1,000 goiter surgeries, including 6 cases of giant goiter. The vast majority of patients with giant goiter are ethnic minorities from the mountainous regions of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces. Many have suffered from thyroid goiter for a long time, sometimes up to 30-40 years, until the goiter grows too large, making surgery very difficult.
