Extend the validity period of the B1 driver's license.
The Ministry of Transport has just issued Circular 48/2014/TT-BGTVT amending and supplementing a number of articles of Circular 46/2012/TT-BGTVT dated November 7, 2012, regulating the training, examination, and issuance of driver's licenses for road motor vehicles, including amending the regulations on the validity period of the B1 driver's license.

According to Circular 48/2014/TT-BGTVT recently issued by the Ministry of Transport, effective from December 1, 2014, a Class B1 driver's license is valid until the age of 55 for women and 60 for men; in the case of drivers over 45 for women and over 50 for men, the license is valid for 10 years from the date of issuance.
Thus, compared to the old regulations, the validity period of a B1 driver's license has increased significantly.
Apart from the B1 driver's license, the validity period of other types of driver's licenses remains unchanged.
Specifically, A1, A2, and A3 driver's licenses have no expiration date. A4 and B2 driver's licenses are valid for 10 years from the date of issuance. C, D, E, FB2, FC, FD, and FE driver's licenses are valid for 5 years from the date of issuance.
A Class B1 driver's license is issued to individuals who do not work as professional drivers, allowing them to operate the following types of vehicles: passenger cars with up to 9 seats, including the driver's seat; trucks, including specialized trucks, with a design payload of less than 3,500 kg; and tractors pulling a trailer with a design payload of less than 3,500 kg. |
Driving license for foreigners
The circular also amends some regulations regarding driver's licenses for foreigners. Specifically, foreigners or Vietnamese citizens residing abroad who wish to drive in Vietnam should follow these procedures:
- If you have a national driver's license, you must go through the procedure to exchange it for a corresponding Vietnamese driver's license.
- If you possess an international driving permit issued by a competent authority of a country participating in the 1968 Convention on Road Traffic, and it is still valid, you are permitted to drive the types of vehicles specified in the permit without having to exchange it for a Vietnamese driving license.
- In cases where an international treaty on driver's licenses to which Vietnam is a party contains different provisions, the provisions of that international treaty shall apply.
