According to Circular 48/2014/TT-BGTVT recently issued by the Ministry of Transport, effective from December 1, 2014, the B1 driving license issued to drivers is valid until the age of 55 for women and 60 for men; in case the driver is over 45 years old for women and over 50 years old for men, the driving license is issued for a period of 10 years from the date of issue.
Thus, compared with the old regulations, the validity period of B1 driving license has increased significantly.
Except for the B1 driving license, the validity of other types of driving licenses remains the same.
Specifically, A1, A2, A3 class driver's licenses have no expiration date. A4, B2 class driver's licenses are valid for 10 years from the date of issue. C, D, E, FB2, FC, FD, FE class driver's licenses are valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
Class B1 driving license is issued to non-professional drivers to drive the following types of vehicles: Passenger cars with up to 9 seats, including the driver's seat; trucks, including specialized trucks with a design load of less than 3,500 kg; Tractors pulling a trailer with a design load of less than 3,500 kg. |
Driving license for foreigners
The Circular also amends a number of regulations on driving licenses for foreigners. Specifically, foreigners or Vietnamese residing abroad who want to drive in Vietnam must do the following:
- If you have a national driving license, you must change it to a corresponding Vietnamese driving license.
- If you have an international driving license issued by a competent authority of a country participating in the 1968 Convention on Road Traffic, and it is still valid, you can drive the type of vehicle specified in the driving license without having to convert it to a Vietnamese driving license.
- In case an international treaty on driving licenses of which Vietnam is a member has different provisions, the provisions of that international treaty shall apply.
