Indian police have just announced that a landslide is believed to have buried at least 16 people in the Indian-controlled western Kashmir region.

Fatal landslides occurred in the Chadoora region, the hardest-hit area in the Himalayas, where hundreds of people died in floods in September 2014.

Rescue teams last night found six bodies under piles of mud and debris from the landslide, and are continuing to search for 10 other people who are still missing.

Local police said 237 families have been evacuated, most of them from Chadoora.

Also yesterday, the Indian government issued a flood warning as the Jhelum River rose to alarming levels.

Last year's floods in India claimed the lives of around 300 people, left thousands homeless, and destroyed property and infrastructure, causing estimated damage of up to $16 billion.
