The Thượng Diên Temple was built by the local people in the 14th century to worship the deities Cao Sơn, Cao Các, Đức Thánh Trần, Tam Tòa Thánh Mẫu, and the village's tutelary deity, Admiral Nguyễn Cự Tộ – a talented general of King Trần Nhân Tông. For a long time, the temple served as a center of cultural and spiritual activities for the people in the region.
In 1930-1931, the temple witnessed the unwavering loyalty of communist soldiers in the face of torture inflicted by the enemy. Later, the temple was chosen by provincial authorities as a workplace during the years of fierce American bombing of North Vietnam. Through the vicissitudes of history, wartime bombings, and natural disasters like storms and floods, the Thuong Dien Temple suffered severe damage. In 2009, with the consensus of the authorities at all levels and the contributions of the people, the Thuong Dien Temple was restored on a grand and solemn scale.

This place also preserves many important historical artifacts and documents such as copies of royal decrees, lists of divine titles, royal edicts, and legends... Every year, the temple organizes many ceremonial activities that reflect the rich cultural identity of the nation, attracting a large number of people to participate.
On March 16, 2015, the People's Committee of Nghe An province issued a decision recognizing Thuong Dien Temple as a provincial-level historical relic. This was a joyous occasion for the Party Committee and people of Nghi Loc district in general, and for the Party Committee, government, and people of Nghi Dien commune in particular. The recognition of Thuong Dien Temple as a historical relic has created an important legal framework for protecting and promoting the value of the relic in the future.
