French Election: Far-right party unexpectedly wins elections in many localities

On March 29, Reuters and AFP quoted French Prime Minister Manuel Valls as saying that the victory of the far-right National Front (FN) party in the local elections held on the same day was a sign of a major change in political life in this country.

On March 29, Reuters and AFP quoted French Prime Minister Manuel Valls as saying that the victory of the far-right National Front (FN) party in the local elections held on the same day was a sign of a major change in political life in this country.

Mr Valls confirmed that the conservative UMP party and its centrist allies had won the election and that the ruling Socialist Party had lost seats.

Exit polls conducted by Ipsos and CSA companies show that the FN may have won a large number of seats in the local areas, possibly more than two provincial councils. Meanwhile, pre-election polls did not show this./.
