California firmly bans foie gras.

(Baonghean.vn) - On Tuesday, the 14th, the US Supreme Court ruled that California can maintain its ban on the import and sale of foie gras – a ban the state imposed in 2012.

The judges rejected appeals from the Hot's restaurant chain and foie gras producers, including the Quebec Duck and Goose Farmers Association. In August 2013, arguments that the ban violated free trade were also dismissed by the court. The final 27-page ruling highlighted how the product was made, specifically detailing how ducks and geese were force-fed through tubes to store fat in their livers – a practice that angered animal welfare organizations.

Foie gras is "stigmatized" in the US.

Jonathan Lovvom, a lawyer for the Humane Society of the United States—an animal rights organization—welcomed the Supreme Court's decision: "This ruling means California has the right to ban the sale of food produced in a way that is cruel to animals."

The reaction from residents of the English-speaking community did not affect the French foie gras industry. On the contrary, French foie gras exports increased by 4.6 million euros thanks to its popularity in the Belgian and Japanese markets. Currently, the export value of this quintessential French dish has reached 104 million euros.
