California firmly bans foie gras

October 15, 2014 17:24

(Baonghean.vn) - On Tuesday, the 14th, the US Supreme Court ruled to allow the state of California to maintain its ban on the import and sale of foie gras pâté - a ban the state had enacted since 2012.

Judges dismissed appeals by the Hot's restaurant chain and by foie gras pâté producers, including the Quebec Duck and Goose Breeders' Association. In August 2013, arguments that the ban violated free trade were also rejected by the court. The court's final 27-page ruling highlighted how the product was made, detailing in particular how ducks and geese were fed through tubes to store fat in their livers - a practice that outraged animal rights groups.

Foie gras is "discriminated" in the US

Jonathan Lovvom, an attorney for the Humane Society of the United States - an animal rights organization - welcomed the Supreme Court's decision: "This ruling means California has the right to ban the sale of food produced by cruel methods on animals."

The reaction of the English-speaking community did not affect the French foie gras industry. On the contrary, the export of French foie gras increased by 4.6 million euros thanks to its popularity in the Belgian and Japanese markets. Currently, the export value of this typical dish of the culinary land has reached 104 million euros.
