Over 1400 entries were submitted to the 2014 National Journalism Awards.

The preliminary judging round for the 9th National Journalism Awards 2014 commenced on the afternoon of April 15th in Hanoi.

The National Press Awards Council for the 9th time in 2014 announced that this year, the Council received more than 1700 entries from 136 organizations and individuals, of which 1462 entries met the eligibility criteria; compared to last year, the number of entries decreased (1665 entries).

According to Tran Gia Thai, Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, the decrease in the number of entries this year is partly due to the merger and relocation of some newspapers and magazines belonging to ministries and agencies.

Of the 1462 eligible entries, in the print journalism category, there were 307 entries in the news, feature articles, and interviews; 116 entries in editorials, commentaries, and essays; and 351 entries in reportage, investigative reporting, journalistic essays, and notes.

In the field of photojournalism, there were 103 entries in the categories of single photos, photo series, and photo essays. The radio broadcasting category had a total of 130 entries in the categories of news, feature articles, interviews, commentary, essays, panel discussions, general radio programs, and reports, investigative reports, and essays; among them, the number of works in the categories of radio reports, investigative reports, and essays increased compared to last year.

In the field of television, there are 209 works in the news, reportage, and documentary genres; 24 works in the commentary, discussion, and talk show genres; and 98 television documentaries.

In the field of online journalism this year, there was an increase in the number of works in the categories of news, feature articles, interviews, and commentary with 108 works; and in the categories of investigative reporting, journalistic essays, and notes, there were 42 works.

To judge the preliminary round, the 9th National Press Awards Council in 2014 decided to establish a preliminary judging panel of 70 members, chaired by Mr. Tran Gia Thai, Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association. From April 15th to May 4th, the preliminary judging panel, comprising 10 subcommittees, will evaluate and assess 11 award categories across various journalistic forms.

After reviewing and evaluating all the entries, the preliminary judging panel is responsible for selecting and recommending the finalists for each award category. Entries are judged using a 10-point scoring system.

The official score for each work is the average of the total scores given by the members of each subcommittee to that work. Members of the preliminary judging panel do not score their own works. The list of works that advance to the final round is ranked from highest to lowest according to their official scores.

The final round of the 2014 National Journalism Awards is scheduled to open on May 16th. The 9th National Journalism Awards ceremony will take place on June 21st, coinciding with the usual commemoration of Vietnam's Revolutionary Journalism Day.
