According to the Independent, the rhino named Sudan, 40 years old, has been equipped with a radio transmitter and is under 24-hour armed guard in his habitat in Kenya. His horn has also been cut off to prevent poaching.
"The only reason we cut Sudan's horn is to deter poachers. If the rhino has no horn, it is no longer in their sights. This is purely for Sudan's safety," Elodie Sampere, a ranger at Sudan's care, explained.
Sudan and two other females of the same species have been cared for at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya since late 2009. They are three of the five northern white rhinos left in the world. According to scientists, the chances of Sudan and the two remaining females reproducing are decreasing. However, they are still trying to help Sudan mate, hoping that the offspring will protect this species from extinction.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, there were more than 2,000 northern white rhinos living in the world in 1960. By 1984, only 15 remained due to over-hunting. Not only do poachers slaughter rhinos to sell their horns for $75,000/kg, they also threaten the lives of the staff protecting the rare animal.
